Record number of refugees opt to leave in 2016
ReplyDeletehttp://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/12/record-number-refugees-opt-leave-2016-161228131140508.html
This article begins by giving the number of refugees and migrants that decided to leave Germany this year: 55,000. Germany's hardened stance on immigration laws and asylum rules affected most of these decisions, and they have noticeably tightened their security. It is better to have people leaves voluntarily that to deport people, and Germany has increased its budget by 7 million euros to support efforts of getting people to leave Germany voluntarily; many of those who left returned to their home countries. This year, more refugees were turned away at the borders of Germany than ever before—19,720—and a record amount of asylum requests were denied. This article connects to the topic because it relays information about the amount of refugees and migrants in a specific country and gives specific numbers of how many left and how many were denied access.
Mediterranean migrant deaths in 2016 pass 5,000: UN
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/12/mediterranean-migrant-deaths-2016-pass-5000-161223130357172.html
This article starts by describing more fatalities of migrants and refugees: there were two shipwrecks off of Italy with 100 people feared to be dead. This death toll would raise the death toll of refugees on the Mediterranean to 5,000. Last year, over 1 million people crossed the sea with about 3,600 deaths; this year, only about 360,000 people have successfully crossed, and the death toll is up by substantial amounts. Though the Italian coast guard has been rescuing people, boats have continued to capsize, and the quality of the boats used this year has worsened from the previous year. This article relates to the topic because it given information about the struggles of refugees and migrants, and how hard it is for them to get to where they want to be.
US election: Who will be banned under Trump's immigration plan?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-37086579
This article explains what Trump's plan for immigration is and how it works. The article explained the methods he proposed to control immigration, such as a test or interview. The article went on to compare and contrast this plan with his idea to ban Muslims, and explained the groups of people who would be affected by this plan. Lastly, the article answers the question of "will his plan make America safer?" This article ties in with the topic because it presents a current view on how to tackle the problem of illegal immigration, which was talked about in Great Decisions. This plan may not be the correct course of action, but it is an opinion about how to handle this issue. It shows one extreme of possible actions. This article expands on the idea of how to tackle this problem by presenting a possible strategy to do so.
Rescued Iranian nationals make immigration applications
http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-36526507
This article informs the reader about an event where three Iranian men were rescued off the Sussex coast and filed for immigration. It also includes facts about how thirteen Albanian men were also rescued but removed from the UK. Although the article is short, it is the event that it is reporting on that counts. It shows that attempts at immigration by refugees is common and a growing occurrence. In addition, it offers two examples of fates that could happen to a hopeful immigrant. This relates to the topic because it gives a real life example of refugees wanting to become legal immigrants and shows that it is common.
Fact Check- Donald Trump on Syria Refugees: http://www.npr.org/sections/parallels/2016/06/15/482184991/fact-check-donald-trump-and-syrian-refugees
ReplyDeleteEurope May See Terrorism as a Fact of Life: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/europe/after-berlin-market-attack-europe-faces-grim-future-with-terrorism-as-fact-of-life/2016/12/23/6f2f6536-c84c-11e6-acda-59924caa2450_story.html?utm_term=.af34681d8353
In the Great Decision passage on International Migration, Chamie made the point that illegal immigration has roared to the forefront of American politics and has made a decidedly large impact in other countries as well. And as shown in the NPR article, it seems that even the president elect either does not know the true facts or is intentionally skewing the facts to support his platform. For example, while he mentions the many migrants entering the country, his statement does not tell about how stringent the process is. However, from an opposing viewpoint, as shown in the Washington Post, the danger associated with allowing a large number refugees from countries seens as dangerous because they have acted as the home territory of terrorist organization in the past is too great. In my opinion, Chamie was completely correct in that immigration has become a very important topic for many people in a variety of countries.
Police And Illegal Immigration: What Our Neighbors Do

Finding Europe Untenable, More Migrants Return To Their Home Countries
http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2016/09/23/495170249/finding-europe-untenable-more-migrants-return-to-their-home-countries
A very hot topic very recently, immigration has been a major issue throughout the entire world. In the first article relates back to a key point in the Global Decision book about illegal immigration and ways to try to prevent by establishing a successful action plan. For example, quoted in in Global Decisions briefing book "If international migration is managed properly, it is widely recognized that can be beneficial for all concerned." In the article it specifically relates as it talks about how there is a struggle identifying whether one is an illegal immigrant. "Officially, local police in Mexico aren't supposed to go around asking people about their immigration status, says Alejandro Lares, former chief of municipal police in Tijuana. But things change once they have probable cause of an immigration violation, or the person commits another crime." This is an example of how officials are trying their best to find a solution, but they must find a better way to figure it out. As Lares says, we cannot just go around asking if one is an illegal immigrant. He in my point of view is suggesting that there has to be a better way. In the second article it gives information how many immigrants are moving back to their homeland from Europe to the mass amount of other immigrants moving in. The article says more than about 100,000 people will be moving back to Afghanistan, Iraq, or Albania and leaving Germany as it seems untenable due to the mass amount other immigrants. In the Global Decision briefing book it says how international migration has tripled from 76 million in the 1960s to more than 232 million to this day. In conclusion, both articles both can relate back the Global Decisions book as they both express the mass amount of current migration and the issues it presents to other countries.
In Toledo, Syrian Refugees Are Welcomed Amid A Difficult Immigration Climate

Israel asylum seekers: 'They want to break our spirits'
http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/2016/11/israel-asylum-seekers-break-spirits-161106063858649.html
These articles are on opposite sides of the spectrum. The first article goes against what was said in GBDD. Some refugees are finding a new life in Toledo, Ohio. One refugee who has recently moved is Omar Al-Amar. He and his family have started a new life in America, as his most recent son in a full fledged United States Citizen. Although Donald Trump is looking to change this, some refugees are still allowed to come into the United States. The second article is about how many countries such as Israel are not allowing in any refugees. Sudanese and Eritreans have been tried to flee to Israel are not allowed asylum, and even Israel has built a fence between it and Egypt to make sure no one could come in. Many refugees hate being one, such as Shiden Kiflai who said "I love my country ... It is my destiny. I don't like being a refugee. It is not a matter of choice."
The world needs a new strategy to tackle the migration crisis
ReplyDeletehttps://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/jan/15/migration-deaths-europe-davos-strategy
This article highlights the major problems with migration, and possible solutions to fix this issue in the future. The article begins by discussing the massive numbers of people that die each day in attempts to migrate, to emphasize the problem. The author believes that too many countries are focused on blocking migration because it will only encourage more illegal immigration. They think that a balance needs to be found between not letting people in and securing borders. There should be a system that allows a temporary asylum for refugees and short term employment for those seeking jobs. This article relates to the topic because they both address the many problems with migration and they acknowledge the necessity of a better plan to end the crisis in the future.
The truth about America's illegal immigrants
http://theweek.com/articles/650402/truth-about-americas-illegal-immigrants
This article is very fact-based and focuses specifically on illegal immigration. It is broken up into sections describing several different aspects, including details about their numbers in the United States, what they contribute, and the problems caused by them. A reason why it would be so difficult to eradicate all or most illegal immigrants is because of the extreme costs it would take the country as well as the impact on the economy due to their major contribution to the workforce. Arizona is used as an example of the positive and negative consequences of enforcing more strict laws on immigration and deporting more illegal immigrants. While there have been negative effects, like overall reduced employment, there have also been good outcomes like the state's gain in money since they no longer need to accommodate for illegal immigrants for things like schooling and medical care. This article relates to the topic because it shows how important of a problem illegal immigration is and that cautious steps need to be taken because otherwise, there could be severe consequences for the receiving countries.
ReplyDeleteAny number of Syrian refugees may be too many for Trump
https://www.pri.org/stories/2016-12-01/any-number-syrian-refugees-may-be-too-many-trump
This article is mainly about why Syrian refugees are fleeing, and why Donald Trump does not want those same people migrating into the U.S. Usually, the United States does not accept as many immigrants as other countries such as Turkey. The author of this article really focuses on Trump’s plans on this topic. Since terrorist threats have been high in the past years, Trump is reluctant in letting in people from Syria. Also, this is the area where the group ISIS is, and bringing in people might be a big risk of bringing terrorists.
Syrian refugees are now paying smugglers to take them back
https://gpinvestigations.pri.org/syrian-refugees-are-now-paying-smugglers-to-take-them-back-6fa9ef8242e3#.lp0siwykq
This article is mainly about Syrian refugees trying to escape and live freely in other countries, such as Greece, but most of them are trying to return to Syria after harsh conditions. Firstly, the author states how dangerous the journey is getting to a new country, especially with a family. When many Syrians got to the country, for example Greece, they were put into waiting camps and facilities with harsh and unsanitary living conditions. This made the families want to go back to their home countries, because Syria was actually better.
EU Declares Freezing Conditions in Greek Refugee Camps "Untenable"
ReplyDeletehttp://www.npr.org/2017/01/17/510204535/eu-declares-freezing-conditions-in-greek-refugee-camps-untenable
This is an interview with a woman who lives by the shore of the Greek island of Lesbos, and who has helped countless refugees who land near her house. They often come from Syria or Iraq, and they come there on boats, in many cases several boats a day. There they face freezing cold weather and nowhere to go for shelter. The woman, Philippa Kempson, tries to help them by giving them extra food and clothes. For this she has received many threats, which reflects how bad the refugee crisis is getting to be in places like Greece, and how sour it's making some people towards refugees.
Shelter for Migrant Children in Arkansas Still Possible
https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/shelter-for-migrant-children-in-arkansas-still-possible/2017/01/20/b1be964e-df5b-11e6-8902-610fe486791c_story.html
This article is about an old vacant job corps site in Arkansas that could potentially be made into a shelter for unoccupied migrant children held at the border. The Arkansas National Guard has taken an interest in this, and would use the shelter to teach kids life skills. However, not everyone is completely on board with the idea. This shows how bad the overflow of unoccupied immigrant children can be.
“US elections: Trump details plans to track illegal immigrants” http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-37207369
ReplyDeleteAlthough this article is brief it hit on key ideas that Donald Trump has in regards to illegal immigration. According to Trump’s campaign speech in Iowa he plans to implement tracking systems on illegal immigrants which would track if a person overstayed their visa. Trump also indicated that he wanted to build a wall around Mexico and prevent illegal immigrants from receiving welfare benefits. Lastly, Trump wants to deport all illegal immigrants that are criminals. This relates to section four of the GDBB because the United States is expected to receive a plethora of illegal immigrants in the coming years.
“Dark and smoky shelters for refugees stranded in Serbia” http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/inpictures/2017/01/dark-smoky-shelters-refugees-stranded-serbia-170118192733389.html
This article describes what it is like for some refugees in Serbia. This article picks out a specific warehouse behind the Belgrade train station. Here the refugees experience polar temperatures where the wind blows through the building. The air is saturated because of the fires inside the building to help them keep warm. The refugees also have no means of sanitation, and bathe outside in water that was heated up in old, wooden barrels. Volunteers equip each person with one warm meal a day. Most of the refugees do not want to stay in Serbia, however they dread deportation if they try to go to other countries. Some pictures are provided that show that the only way of light is through holes in the building or broken windows. There is a lot of garbage in the warehouse, nonetheless the people sleep on the floor wrapped in blankets.
Houses of Worship Poised to Serve as Trump-Era Immigrant Sanctuaries
ReplyDeletehttps://www.nytimes.com/2016/12/27/us/houses-of-worship-poised-to-serve-as-trump-era-immigrant-sanctuaries.html
In Philadelphia, a man is avoiding deportation by staying in a church. The man was supposed to report to the immigration authorities last month to be deported to Mexico, but instead he sought refuge in the Arch Street United Methodist Church, one of 450 churches that have offered sanctuary to undocumented immigrants. The religious left has made protecting immigrants a priority, especially now that Trump and his immigration plans are in office. Churches, schools, and hospitals are considered sensitive places for immigration officers and they are instructed not to go into them without proper authority. However, many fear that churches may not be places of sanctuary under Trump’s immigration plan. This relates to the chapter because it expands upon illegal immigration in America.
As peace talks loom, Syrian refugees see little future in going home
http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Middle-East/2017/0117/As-peace-talks-loom-Syrian-refugees-see-little-future-in-going-home
Despite a recent ceasefire in Syria, many refugees don’t want to go home. One refugee said that the sectarian divisions are too deep to go home and that she’d rather go to Britain. Others are doubtful that the ceasefire will amount to anything substantial in terms of peace. Another refugee claimed that the Syrian government was only moving Sunnis so that they could “crush them.” There is little hope for change in the hearts of Syrian refugees. This relates to the chapter because it reveals what the Syrian refugees think about the crisis in Syria.
Obama Administration Ends Refugee Policy That Favored Cubans
ReplyDeletehttp://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/01/12/509575935/obama-administration-ends-refugee-policy-that-favored-cubans
This article discusses a migration policy that recently ended between the U.S. and Cuba called the "wet-foot, dry-foot" policy. This policy essentially states that if immigrants from Cuba are trying to make their way to Florida by boat, they are allowed to enter the U.S. if they reach America without getting caught. However, if they are caught, they have to return to Cuba. Obama decided to do this to make relations with Cuba more normal after lifting the embargo. This way, Cubans are treated like other migrants and will be deported if caught illegally. The article also mentions the end of of another policy that let Cuban doctors legally enter for a time. This relates to the book because it discusses illegal immigration and how that now applies to Cuba as it does to the rest of immigrants. Now, Cubans will be deported if illegally entered, instead of having a chance to come in legally with just crossing the border.
Refugee arrivals drop by a third in Germany
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/01/refugee-arrivals-drop-germany-170111141054925.html
This article focuses on the great drop in the number of refugees in Germany in 2016, and why. In 2015, 890,000 refugees arrived, but only 280,000 in 2016. This is due to a refugee route in Balkan being closed, forcing most refugees to enter Greece instead. Also, refugee applications have increased, showing that now more are applying first instead of just entering. The article also touches on how deportation time is raised, and so is the amount of people voluntarily going home. Finally, the article mentions how conditions for the refugees are harder now with cold weather coming in. This article relates to the book because it talks about refugees and where they are going, which is mostly Europe, including Germany. Also, it touches on deportation again, like in the book and the problems with illegal immigrants.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/nov/13/trump-deportation-immigration-criminals
ReplyDeleteDonald Trump’s immigration plan’s: start by deporting 3 million ‘criminals’
This article discussed what Donald Trump will do with all the undocumented people living in the United States. He states that he’s going to start doing this by first deporting the undocumented people that have criminal records, those who are in gangs, and those who sell drugs. The article then states that Donald Trump still plans on deporting the approximate 11 million undocumented people living in the U.S., and deporting families in a “humane” way. These statements from Donald Trump contrasted those of Paul Ryan who said that the primary focus would be to secure borders before attempting anything with immigration. The article then goes on to explain all that President Obama had done in order to secure are borders such as increasing surveillance and patrol as well as accomplishing a great feat of deporting 2.5 million illegal immigrants. The article supports the claim from the Great Decisions Book that sometimes immigration has negatives that are associated with it and illegal immigration is a difficult thing to control.
https://www.pri.org/stories/2015-08-25/refugees-cross-hungary-builds-new-iron-curtain-stop-them
Refugees cross as Hungary builds 'new Iron Curtain' to stop them
This article is about Syrian refugees as they pass through Hungary and the wall that Hungary is putting up in order to stop this. The article begins by describing how the refugees coming from Serbia must take an abandoned railway path in order to get past the fence while others go directly over it. The government continues to rage over the “illegal migrants” entering, but the police continue to work under the procedures with their country’s obligations under the 1951 UN Refugee Convention. It then talks about how its three main stations, Deli, Keleti, and Nyugati, are all overrun by refugees. Although this is currently happening in Hungary the government continues to build its fence. This relates to the chapter in the Great Decisions Book because it discusses the Syrian refugee situation and the 1951 Refugee Convention which prohibits the expulsion or return of refugees.
Bills would help, hurt undocumented immigrants
ReplyDeletehttps://www.washingtonpost.com/local/bills-would-help-hurt-undocumented-immigrants/2017/01/20/2a067e26-df59-11e6-8902-610fe486791c_story.html?utm_term=.827d83df2e6b
This article relates to the section of immigration that was discusses in Great Decisions. The article leads off by saying that the hate crimes have had a correlation with Trump who has just become the president of the United States but this was also shown during the election period. Virginia has had ideas of new bills that could be applied to the state. HB 1779 would assist immigrants in defending themselves during hate crimes, they would be labeled officially as hate crimes and there would be a harsher punishment that followed. HB 1682 would let the immigrant get a legal temporary ID as long as they have "'established residency in the Commonwealth, has filed an income tax return with the Commonwealth, has registered with the Department of Homeland Security' and can provide proof of a car insurance policy." This would lessen hit and runs that occur in the state. HB 1857 allows immigrant students to pay in state tuition for colleges. Trump has said that he will take away Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals so this could save the, from paying two to three times more for college than an American citizen student. HB 2001 allows immigrants to go to public college and have support from the school faculty in order for there to be places where they can continue to go to school. The article provides an example of legislation that helps immigrants like the opportunities immigrants have.
Immigrants Who Came to U.S. as Children Fear Deportation Under Trump
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/20/us/immigrants-donald-trump-daca.html?_r=0
The article describes immigrants feelings about Trump threatening to deport children who came here illegally. The children who came here illegally call themselves dreamers. The DACA which allows children to stay in the US like the Dreamer kids can be gone with the signature of the new secretary. It is strange because these people have lived here most their life they would be seen as Americans if you did not know their history. Obama said to Trump "' to think long and hard'" before he did away with this program. In the south and Midwest there is not much protection for the dreamers so they fear that they could be kicked out of the country soon. This relates to Great Decisions because it provides insight on the laws and news where immigrants may soon be deported unfairly.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/01/20/why-a-wall-wont-keep-americas-newest-immigrants-out/?utm_term=.104b4a7bc7d7
ReplyDelete"Why a wall won’t keep America’s newest immigrants out"
This article counters the argument that many immigrants, especially from Central America, are coming in and taking low-pay, low skill jobs in labor from American citizens who need more pay. This common delusion is proven wrong by the fact that most immigrants today actually come and take high skill jobs such as computer sciences or business, and that 51% of them, compared to 31% of American men, have bachelor's degrees, and so are more likely to get higher skill and higher paying jobs. In addition, Mexico and Central America have actually lowered in their immigration rates, and many countries in the Asian continent have actually gone up in immigration.
http://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/2016/10/dear-donald-trump-letter-syrian-refugee-161013173005294.html
"Dear Donald Trump: A letter from a Syrian refugee"
This article is a letter from a Syrian refugee to Donald Trump. It conveys the experiences and life of a refugee, whose home had been destroyed by warfare and terrorism. He describes tanks and bombs, and the way him and his family had to flee Syria before they were killed. This letter allows readers to understand the life of a refugee as not just a statistic but a person, moving from place to place to avoid destruction, and hoping for a place to call home.
Amid Record Waves of Refugees, Italy Finding Limits to Its Compassion
ReplyDeletehttp://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/special-features/2014/10/141031-italy-immigration-crisis-human-trafficking/
This article talks about the refugees from the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia coming from ships and small boats to the coasts of Italy. These people were in the midst of war and poverty in their countries and Italy will help save them from an unfulfilling life. There is still a negative side of overpopulation with Italies population being 6.1 million people and over 60% of them being immigrants. Also, the immigrants from these countries do not speak italian, therefore they have to learn a whole new lifestyle and a completely different language than their native language.
Syrian-Americans: model immigrants?
http://www.csmonitor.com/Commentary/the-monitors-view/2016/1219/Syrian-Americans-model-immigrants
This article is about Syrian refugees that are in need of an escape route from their war stricken region. There are several statistics with information about the progress that Syrian refugees make when brought to the United States. Many of them learn English and find jobs and homes quickly. The average amount of money made yearly by Syrian Americans is slightly less than $10,000 more than the average middle wage american makes in a year. This shows that Syrian immigrants work harder than american born middle wage citizens and are making a positive impact in the United States.
Nine Indonesians Dead, 29 Missing After Boat Capsizes Off Malaysia
ReplyDeletehttp://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2017/01/23/world/asia/23reuters-malaysia-boat.html
The article is was about a boat carrying migrants looking for work. The article then goes on to describe similar incidents that happened in the previous months. This is similar to the GDBB as these people are willing to risk their lives for what they feel will be a better life.
Record Number Of Migrants, Including Cubans, Head To U.S.
http://www.npr.org/2016/12/29/507359459/record-number-of-migrants-including-cubans-head-to-u-s
The article is mainly about illegal immigration to the U.S.. Also it speaks about how Donald Trump claims that “They're sending people that have lots of problems.” It also explains how in the current administration people who leave Cuba for the U.S. are given political asylum. The GDBB reinforces this article as it describes the current situation. The article says that most politicians will not take a strong stance against illegal immigration but that is not accurate as to how the article describes Donald Trump’s stance.
